Tebrau River Cleaning Project, Johor Bahru

10th May 2008
I wasn't aware about this till my brother told me about it. I wondered there's no banner for public awareness.

When I rush to the location (where at the back of Bayu Puteri 3 Apartment), the show had over! And I saw the only awareness was a A3 size board standing 1 meter up beside the road??! Only the peoples who stayed around that area will aware of this event.
I was told that the public respond was perfect!! Because.......everyone who came, they will enjoy free foods & drinks!! Hmm.....what do you think?

The rubbish issue were discussed before on this thread. I am too excited (give a hand too!) because we going to have a clean river around us! End up......it's just because the free foods & drinks attract the public. I manage to snap some photos there......
The rubbish still there but the foods & drinks already finished......

The last junior group

View of the Tebrau River

They took the chances to cruise along the river

The only Survivor along the river bank

Then we accidentally found this....

And decided to find out what is this house floating on the water...??!

The entrance

Oh! It's a small Fisherman Club

We stepped in and have a chat with the fisherman over there.....and realize this is the rubbish collected!

The marine.....

The surrounding....

The mangrove at the other side of the river

Yes, I am disappointed.......hmm.....let's hope for better tomorrow!

Beauty Mama Competition, C.Square, Johor Bahru

Beauty Mother Competition @ City Square Plaza, Johor Bahru (11th May 2008)
Organize by Lion Club

It's a coincidence.
I brought my family with my mum-in-law to City Square Plaza, Johor Bahru for 'Mother's day' lunch and came across this competition.
It's also for the purpose of meeting a friend from Malacca - 9W2HHL (Heng). He was there because of his wife it's one of the judges for the competition!
I simply take out my cam and give some shots of the competition.

The participants line-up for the competition announcement.

From left , middle and right.

Unfortunately I cannot wait until the final result cos run out of time!

I admit that I'm not familiar with the setting of this camera yet. Overall I'm totally disappointed with my shots. (My apologies)

Anyway, just to share some photos of the event.

"HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY"

The Johor Corporation organise the event every year at Bukit Layang Layang (Kite Hill), Pasir Gudang Johor. (It's about 30 minutes drive from Johor Bahru town) The Festival was on 24th February 2008.

The field was pack of peoples when we arrived. There are many country participate in the yearly events of Johor.

Different kind of kites you can see from the big field. Big, small, creative and even Huge....everyone was showing their skills and the beautiful kites they have. But the weather seems like not on their side, because it's cloudy & windless.

So we only manage to see those giant kite laying on the green field.......

The mobile Kentucky Fried Chicken.

We almost lost our direction while on the way back to get our car........!

Beautiful View of Johor Straits

On one sunny day and I visited this small fishing village and the scenic view really surprise me!!
The village located at the back of Taman Perling - a.k.a. Perling Seafood Village, Singapore just at opposite.

Photo from Google Earth

I simply walk in to one of the Seafood Restaurant call 'Restaurant Asli' (N1°27.634' E103 °42.298'). It's not a big & commercial type, but it's nice and comfort. You can have very nice view of Johor Straits from the restaurant.

The locals are staying along the straits from both sites of the restaurant.

Another restaurant on the right.

This is view in front, right & left from the restaurant.

Closer view.....

Left side

Closer view.....

Right side

You can even zoom in and see some high-rise building at Johor Bahru Town on your right.

I cannot comment on the foods yet. I will definitely come back again for the Sunset and the seafood.

Yiddish Summer Weimar Symposium

I've been invited to speak again at a symposium in July at the Yiddish Summer Weimar, an ambitious workshop/festival on Yiddish music and culture that takes place for about a month in Weimar, the Germany city more associated with Goethe, Schiller and a failed "Republic" than with East European Jewish traditions....

This year's Symposium July 12-14, and the Yiddish Summer as a whole, are dedicated to a project called "The Other Europeans" -- an intercultural dialogue exploring Yiddish and Roma music, culture and identity.

I'll be speaking about popular images of Jews and Yiddish culture in Europe, including stereotypes, cliches and kitsch. I'll discuss their inherent ambiguities in a world that straddles the Jewish and non-Jewish community and where stereotypes and shorthand often take the place of nuanced definitions.

As I noted in my last post, from LA -- boundaries between insider and outsider, believer and non-believer, devotee and ironic observer can sharply delineate the differences between kitsch and caricature, art and artifice, stereotype and homage. Perspectives shift, and the boundaries often blur; the images and their meaning are often decidedly in the eye of the beholder, and they are frequently dictated by changing religious realities, philo-Semitic, often engineered nostalgia, and the powerful exigencies of the marketplace.
