Hike on Mount. Ophir (Gunung Ledang), Johor

Mount Ophir (N2°22.402' E102°36.481')
"
Hikers had rated Gunung Ledang (Mount. Ophir) as the 6th difficult summit trails among Malaysia mountains. There's 4 trails can go up to the summit. Here's the hiker's trail from Gate B, Pusat Operasi Taman Negara Gunung Ledang. Total 8 checkpoints (CP) along the trail. The terrain before CP5 is quite gentle uphill. The KFC session is after CP6 up to CP 8 (summit) ... Along the way there's ropes and ladders to assist. This is not a leisure jungle walk." - By Snail-Works

Welcome to Mount Ophir of Johor

Pusat Operasi Taman Negara Gunung Ledang

"We have not much time to enjoy the scenery due to we were late to the trailhead. There's rule that if anybody cannot reach summit before 3.00pm, he/she must turn back from the point where he/she is. Hikers are not allowed to camp overnight in the park." - By Snail-Works

Check Point 3

a small cascade near CP5 Sungai Tiga Segi

"I hope next time i can have more time to explore the waterfalls and flora here." - By Snail-Works

Start of KFC! (KFC = Killing Fitness Centre)

guide is guiding us how to cross the big boulder

CP6 Gua (Cave) Kambing

continue of rock ascent

There must at least few hours of climb & hike to reach the peak of Mount Ophir. The total trail is about 5.8KM from the start point.
I might not fit enough for the trail....Hopefully one day the National Park is open for camping overnight, then...maybe I can try. Or else I'm definitely not fit to hike up & down within a day....haha!

Snail-Works and friends finally reach the summit. You can see the satisfaction from the face! :)

Don't wanna let go !

The above guide and photos are provided by Snail-Works. Thanks!

Start point to CP5 (Check Point 5) = 3.9KM
The trail length for KFC = 1.9KM
From Point A to B = 5.8KM - 1286m Height

As you walk towards the waterfall, you will pass by a row of souvenir shop and the last unit is the Ranger Office.

The Ranger Office.

I had been looking at the Ranger office for more information of the hike of Gunung Ledang (Mount Ophir), but too bad there was nobody around after 30 minutes waiting....

Very bad for tourist....the office was empty!

But there was a notice on the wall stated :
1) Only day trip climbing (hiking) activities by booking are acceptable.
2) All climbing (hiking) activities must use Entrance B due to the safety of the Climbers (hikers).
3) Walk-in climbers (hikers) will not be served. The booking can be made by lettering to Johor National Park or calling at 019-7772057. Thank you.

Poor english....

Opposite of the souvenir shop, there's a mini food court.

You can have your Teh Tarik and relax over the wonderful nature!

After this row of shops, that is the area where everyone can soak in the cold water during the hot day!

The jungle trekking trail...

We will stay one night over here on 21st March 2009. That will be the Mega GG (Gathering) of Malfreemaps.
I will blog more detail after this holiday at Gunung Ledang (Mount Ophir) Resort.

Another news about Mount Ophir (Gunung Ledang)

Gunung Ledang Rescue by MARTS RACES

On 1st May 2008, Northern Johor MARTS organised an RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) Emergency Communication Drill attended by hams from Segamat, Muar, Melaka, representatives from NESRAC and JASRA.

Hams were given an exposure on how important it is for hams to know how to set up a portable station. Elmers, 9M2WT, 9M2DA, 9M2FX and 9M2KMA were at hand to give hams some pointers. Hams present were given a basic description emergency communication protocol... dos and don'ts

Teams of hams were then sent to various parts of Bukit Kepong and from their locations, they sent messages back to base and to each other. By the end of the day, some teams were asking for more. So more will come in future.

18 days later... May 19th, 2008..12:00 hrs...our RACES practise were put to use.... Northern Johor MARTS received a call from Moi Adventure (Moi Adventure is a Gunung Ledang mountain guide/trekker group). Moi Adventure and Northern Johor have been planning an SAR Emergency Communication Exercise on the mountains for hams. 40 trekkers have shown interests to be hams. This call told us that 6 hikers were lost since May 18th.

Within 2 hours, we were at Sagil police station which was made the operation office. As we arrived... the police offficer in-charge requested our help to provide communication for the rescuers. Immediately we set up a communication centre at the Sagil police station with 9M2DA acting as Emergency Coordinator (EC) and activated our RACES protocol with fellow hams from Segamat, Muar and Melaka rushing in with their equipments and 4-wheel jalopies. Rescuers involved in the SAR were Bomba, JPA3 and Moi Adventure trekkers.

By 16:00 hrs rescue teams accompanied by hams moved up to scan the mountains. We set up 3 more portable stations forming a parameter to monitor the rescuers. Hams stayed up as long as there were still rescuers in the mountains and the rescuers were up in the mountains until dawn!

At 04:00 hrs, May 20th, a ham with one of the rescue team manage to spot a fire on one of the peaks. They contacted the climbers and confirmed it was their signal. Finally, the climbers were found at 9:20 hrs.

Many were impressed with our communication methods. Climbers' parents who monitored the rescue at our station were thankful so were the rescuers.

Moi Adventure and Northern Johor MARTS will still continue with our plans to hold an SAR Emergency Communication Exercise. It would probably take 2 days but it will is nothing compared to real live situations.

Sorry, we were too busy with the communications.... we forgot to bring along our cameras...

Northern Johor District Manager, MARTS

Camping at Mount. Ophir (Gunung Ledang), Johor

On the 23rd Oct 2006, 4am before dawn.......
Groups of the JRPILOTS (leads by 9W2LRR) with 13 cars are on the way from Johor Bahru to Tangkak to having their breakfast. And also last minutes shopping for their 3 days 2 nights camping trip at Mount Ophir (Gunung Ledang).

After breakfast, they drove to 'Gate B' and enter the palm oil estate, about 30-45 minutes of bumpy road, they reached the Ranger office.

The charges as below.......

Once the registrations done, they continue their journey by passing this barrier towards the peak of Mount Ophir.

The road condition is good, even normal cars are be able to climb. Along the road, the fresh air the cold temperature will makes you awake and fill with enjoyment. They took about 1 hour and 30 minutes relax drive from the ranger office to the campsite of Mount Ophir -1200 meter, the telekom tower at the peak is about 500 meter away.

Then everyone is busy setting up their individual tents, table and even kitchen!

You can have total relax over here because of the cold atmosphere (below 20° Celsius).......(24 hours free air-con, they said.) Sometimes it will drop below 10° during 2-5am.......

The activities include jungle trekking for the second day guide by the rangers.
The camp site has a washroom about 300 meters away.

There are 2 campsites on Mount Ophir, the other site is for the hikers. You need to hike from the recreation park (access through Gate A) to the peak. If you taking this path, you will pass through the waterfall and also the famous "Princess of Mount Ophir" shower area.....

But after the 2 incidents in 2007, this beautiful camp site has Close until further notice. (The hikers campsite still open for public) We only can pray and wish they (authority) can re-open this camping paradise to the nature lover!
